amygdala, 2023-2024
The term Amygdala refers to a small area of the brain within the limbic system, which is involved in emotional responses and memory storage. At its core, it is concerned with processing negative and challenging emotions and situations. In her series of the same name, ‚Amygdala’, Sina Al-Bayati symbolises lifelong inner transformation and draws attention to what is usually hidden: the complexity of emotions, memories, and fears. A major focus is placed on the individual’s subjective perception and their awareness of it. In her work, she visualises her imagination and perception of personal memories and influences related to home, tradition, fears, and childhood. The essence of the project lies in the emergence and processing of emotions, as well as raising awareness of the shadows of memory within the subconscious. The focus is not only on the external, pleasing aspects of identity but also on delving deeper to reveal the inner tension within the self. Her aim is less about providing a realistic depiction of the world and more about conveying abstract or philosophical ideas, emotions and moods.
